AB - Jessica Steinhauser, owner of Stonehouse Pottery in Guelph, Ontario, is realizing her dream of bringing kachelofen clay-tile ovens to Canada. In various forms, these ovens have been heating European homes for approximately 1,500 years. Steinhauser learned to make kachels, the hollow tiles used in the kachelofen's construction, during a three-year apprenticeship at the Staatliche Fachschule fur Keramik in Landshut, Germany, which she began in 1985. In 2005 she traveled to Austria to work with a master oven builder to study the overall design of the oven. She now makes custom-built ovens. This article presents side bars and diagrams illustrating the internal and external design of the kachelofen; and a short piece written by Mark Twain in 1891, favorably comparing the kachelofen to the American wood stove.
