  abstract = {The Swiss-German Mennonites of Waterloo County, in western Ontario, have a long tradition of seeing the landscape as a spiritual metaphor. Early settlement is often seen as the creation of a small, secluded 'garden' in the midst of a trackless wilderness; later development creates a 'home place' surrounded by fences. Farm layouts, as well as Mennonite poetry and art, indicate the influence of German pietism, with its emphasis on creating a peaceful place apart from the world. [J. H. Sweetland]},
