Mennonites from Pennsylvania and Amish directly from Europe had lived in proximity since the late 18th century. Russian Mennonites started arriving in the 1920's and formed strong bonds of friendship with their Swiss hosts despite language and cultural differences. The three groups cooperated on peace, educational, social, and other endeavors. Work began in the 1970's on harmonizing theology and church structure to pave the way for eventual merger. [M. A.
