In 1833 he purchased land in the small settlement of Ebytown, renamed Berlin, and established an inn, later known as the Commercial Hotel. Gaukel (1785-1853) gave the site for the Waterloo Township Hall and campaigned for the organization of Waterloo County, providing land for the construction of the county courthouse in 1852.
