AB - Describes the life of immigrant William Hespeler (1830-1921) of Baden, Germany, who came to Waterloo, Ontario, in 1850 and in 1873 to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hespeler was sent as an immigration agent by Canada to Russia to negotiate with Mennonites there. His German ethnicity helped him to persuade Mennonites to settle in Manitoba but did not prevent him from marrying Anglo-Celtic women and moving in the upper echelons of British Canadian society. [D.
