AB - Using data from the 1981 census of Canada and earlier censuses, it is shown that Yiddish - once the predominant daily language of Canadian Jewry - is going out of general use among Canadian Jews in the 1980's. Instead, Yiddish is becoming a sort of 'classic' language for Jewish scholars, and will remain a living vernacular only among the Hasidic communities in Toronto and Montreal. Functions and implications of this tongue's use versus abandonment are pointed out, with issues central to its continuing survival. The rise of Judaeo-English is also noted. [J]
