AB - A brief overview of German customs and folk songs traced back to the settlement of the community (known as New Germany before 1941) by Catholic Alsatians in the 1820s and 1830s. Based on interviews with local residents Marie Scherer and Albert Zinger, the author relates musical, culinary and family traditions which have nearly disappeared from the area. Samples of songs remembered by the two elders are included. An English version of this article was published in the Waterloo Historical Society's 64th annual report in 1976, pages 31-36.
