AB - A group of primarily Old Order Amish and Mennonite churches in Ontario successfully maintain the Amish Mennonite Fire and Storm Aid Union that insures their members against natural disaster without the assistance of corporate insurance companies. Begun in 1872, the aid union bases coverage on the biblical ideas of sharing burdens and living 'the simple common life.' Governed by member volunteers, it functions as a nonprofit organization that pays its claims by dividing the amount needed among its subscribing members. Its 120 years of success demonstrate that workable alternatives to corporate for-profit insurance companies are feasible among committed groups. [M. M. Sawin]
