Begun in 1872, the aid union bases coverage on the biblical ideas of sharing burdens and living 'the simple common life.' Governed by member volunteers, it functions as a nonprofit organization that pays its claims by dividing the amount needed among its subscribing members. Its 120 years of success demonstrate that workable alternatives to corporate for-profit insurance companies are feasible among committed groups. [M. M.
