AB - At the outbreak of World War I, roughly 200,000 'Austrians,' mainly of Ukrainian descent, resided in Canada. Until the government released or paroled them, they constituted the majority of enemy aliens interned. The main camps were at Amherst, Nova Scotia; old Fort Henry at Kingston, Ontario; Kapuskasing, Ontario; and Vernon, British Columbia. Administration of the internment camps was unimaginative and bureaucratic. [D. B. Smith]
