TY - JOUR KW - Jews KW - Anti-Semitism KW - Holocaust deniers KW - Zundel Ernst AU - Tom Sinclair-Faulkner AB - Ernst Zundel was convicted for claiming that the Holocaust was a hoax under a little-used Canadian law against publishing untruths that might cause racial or social intolerance. Zundel was born in Germany during World War II. Jews fear he is one of a growing group of people who think the Holocaust was invented by Jews to undermine Western governments and eradicate the "Aryan race." The Canadian Civil Liberties Union was worried that the case would imperil free speech. The charges were brought by Sabrina Citron, a survivor of Auschwitz. Zundel claimed he had won a victory because he received free publicity worth millions of dollars. During the trial, Holocaust survivors were subjected to insulting questions. Zundel is appealing the decision. A similar case will begin in Alberta. Teaching about the Holocaust in Canadian schools is a better method of combating hatred. The trial may make some Canadians aware of the Holocaust for the first time.
