AB - Until the 1950's, the Toronto Jewish community was composed almost exclusively of Jews of European origin (Ashkenazim). Subsequently, many Jews from Asia and Africa (Sephardim) have emigrated to Toronto where they comprise today about a third of the Jewish population. This article describes the monocultural Ashkenazi curriculum in the Jewish educational institutions of multicultural Toronto and the resulting cultural conflict for Sephardic children at these schools. It also analyzes the reasons and circumstances of this present situation and emphasizes the lack of interest on the part of the Jewish community in Sephardic aspects of its cultural heritage. [J]
