TY - JOUR KW - Religious Education KW - Jews AU - Shmuel Shamai AB - Jews have long been at the forefront in the struggle to keep Christianity out of Ontario's public schools, where the transmission of Christian doctrine and norms have always held sway. The proposed inclusion of Christian instruction into the school curriculum drew heated opposition from Ontario Jews in the 1880's. Jews again responded to the adoption of formal religious instruction into school curricula in 1944. Movements in the 1960's and the 1980's to decrease the number of weekly hours of religious instruction, then to abolish it completely, led finally in 1990 to court decisions and school policies banning religious instruction. The efforts in Ontario have influenced similar struggles in British Columbia and Manitoba. [L.
