TY - JOUR KW - Place names KW - Berlin (Ontario) KW - Swastika (Ontario) AU - Alan Rayburn AB - Many place names in Canada were changed after Canadians fought wars against countries from which those names originated or when foreign heroes were subsequently deemed monstrous. Of the approximately 30 names of probable German origin that existed in southwestern Ontario at the beginning of World War I, for example, 3 were changed during wartime. The most significant occurred in 1916, when the city of Berlin was renamed Kitchener, to honor British military hero Lord Horatio Kitchener. Not all attempts to change names succeeded, though. Residents of a village in Ontario that was named Swastika in 1906--for the Sanskrit word meaning "good luck"--successfully resisted efforts in 1940 to change the name to Winston, in honour of British prime minister Winston Churchill. Other name changes are discussed.
