AB - Over the course of the 20th century an Amish and two Mennonite groups in Ontario - the Mennonite Conference of Ontario and Quebec, the Western Ontario Mennonite Conference, and the United Mennonite Conference of Ontario - worked ever closer together until they finally merged in 1988, forming the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada. Mennonites from Pennsylvania and Amish directly from Europe had lived in proximity since the late 18th century. Russian Mennonites started arriving in the 1920's and formed strong bonds of friendship with their Swiss hosts despite language and cultural differences. The three groups cooperated on peace, educational, social, and other endeavors. Work began in the 1970's on harmonizing theology and church structure to pave the way for eventual merger. [M. A.
