AB - Carl Schott came to Canada from the University of Kiel in 1931 to pursue research into the settlement of Southern Ontario. The results of his study were published in Kiel in 1936 and his thorough analysis remains, after almost half a century, the most complete work available on the settlement of the area. It has been used as a reference by relatively few scholars, yet it deserves to be incorporated into the foundations of Canadian geography and, as its author, Carl Schott must be counted as one of the founders of academic geography in Canada. Schott maintained his interest in Canada on his return to Germany and directed a number of his doctoral students to conduct research in Canada. Despite this the German contribution to Canadian geography has been largely ignored. As an illustration of the nature and quality of Schott's work, a translation of an excerpt on land survey systems is provided. -D.D.Kemp
