AB - A study in urban history, organized thematically to include chapters on urban- industrial development in southern Ontario between 1870 and 1930, the urban ethos, a prosopographical analysis of community elites, municipal industrial policies, processes shaping the urban environment to 1912, and later efforts to reshape the urban landscape by planning. The thesis includes many maps and graphs, detailed endnotes and a bibliography; appendices present tables summarizing the roles of community leaders and the entrepreneurs who received municipal inducements. Several published articles and chapters in books have made the thesis findings more accessible to users.
