Temper AB - A photocopy of the published letters from C.G. Klinckhardt to family and friends in Germany. Relating his trip to North America including Upper Canada, he provides one of the earliest accounts of pioneer life in the Waterloo district. Details are given, beginning on page 31, of his arrival in "Willmot, Gore District, Dounschipp Waterloo in Upper Canada." He describes the quality of the land, types of fruit trees, wild nuts and berries, crops and vegetables, and the process of obtaining sap from the maple trees in the spring for making sugar, syrup and cider. Klinckhardt also notes the variety of religious and ethnic groups, particularly the Amish and Mennonite. A letter written by Klinckhardt's son Louis who, with his brother Julius, followed his father to Wilmot in 1831, narrates his experiences as a settler.
