The introduction notes that the land was originally part of the farm of George Schmidt, with a schoolhouse in which the first church meetings were held. The church was formerly known as the Upper Street Church, as Erbs Road was originally called the Oberstrasse. In 1853, David Y. and Barbara Shantz conveyed land for the stone church and cemetery. A new church in red brick was erected in 1929.
