AB - A biography of the Waterloo County Mennonite who played a significant role in helping Mennonites from Ukraine emigrate to Manitoba in the 1870s. Shantz's life is traced from his farm childhood and activities as a businessman and industrialist in Berlin to his relations with the government of Canada concerning the settlement and welfare of the Mennonites from Russia and his numerous trips to the West. Three appendices contain Shantz's "Narrative of a journey to Manitoba", his testimony to Parliament regarding the success of the settlers in Manitoba and the repayment of the loan, and articles by Shantz published in the "Gospel Banner".
