In Schwartzentruber Amish communities, English and AHG are languages of written communication, or in the case of AHG, the language of church services; whereas Pennsylvania German is used in community activities. More progressive Mennonite communities use English conversationally, while AHG is taught as a language of Old Order heritage. Language instruction in private Old Order schools shapes language use, which defines the boundaries of community as well as sacred and secular.
