In various forms, these ovens have been heating European homes for approximately 1,500 years. Steinhauser learned to make kachels, the hollow tiles used in the kachelofen's construction, during a three-year apprenticeship at the Staatliche Fachschule fur Keramik in Landshut, Germany, which she began in 1985. In 2005 she traveled to Austria to work with a master oven builder to study the overall design of the oven. She now makes custom-built ovens. This article presents side bars and diagrams illustrating the internal and external design of the kachelofen; and a short piece written by Mark Twain in 1891, favorably comparing the kachelofen to the American wood stove.}, year = {2007}, journal = {Ceramics Monthly}, volume = {55}, number = {Journal Article}, pages = {40-43, }, isbn = {0009-0328}, language = {English}, }
