Contrary to the view that moving to the suburbs results in a dilution of religious observance for Jews, Orthodox Jews enjoyed a tremendous increase in the opportunities to partake of kosher food, restaurants, and thousands of products that are also purchased by non-Jews. Jews living in Toronto, Ontario, provide a case study in consumption in a suburban kosher lifestyle. However, kosher products are marketed for their religious standard, not necessarily as healthier items. Some critics protest against the extent of the consumerist aspect of the kosher lifestyle, but the proliferation of products has enabled Orthodox Jews to participate in a modern economy while adhering to religious law.
