  abstract = {A study of the transformation of the village, including a discussion of agents and factors in its original development and recent "renaissance". The case of St Jacobs is set in the more theoretical context of the changing functions of small service centres in Canada and the United States. Data for 1971 and 1986, derived from the Census of Canada and Dun and Bradstreet Reference Books as well as fieldwork and interviews, are used to compare St Jacobs with 42 other small centres in central and eastern Canada. The author concludes that the four most critical factors in economic success are heritage, amenity, access and entrepreneurial effort.},
