  abstract = {A study of the settlement by escaped slaves and other blacks in the Queen's Bush area to the north and west of Waterloo County, which included in the 1830s and 1840s the northern half of Wellesley Township and the western portion of Woolwich Township. Chapter 1 gives an overview to 1860, Chapter 2 describes the processes of in-migration and informal settlement, and Chapters 3 and 4 the relationships between missionaries of the inter-denominational American Missionary Association and the black community. Three journal articles have made parts of the thesis more accessible and they are indexed in more detail in the WRP electronic bibliography.},
