  abstract = {In this study, special consideration has been given to the language of bilingual German immigrants and their use of language in various domains, as well as to so-called 'code-switching' from one language to another during everyday speech. Due to the limited extent of this study, social and psychological aspects of bilingualism are dealt with in only minor detail. To ascertain the language usage of these people, 19 informants of German origin in Kitchener/Waterloo have been interviewed. Two sets of questions were prepared for the interviews, one for the older generation and one for children of that older generation. The method of 'face-to-face-communication' has been applied with these representative informants to elicit their language choice in certain domains. The speech of these people is characterized by several kinds of interferences. Consequently, this study also investigates different interference phenomena which occur in the speech of German immigrants. This study allows the conclusion that due to the dominant role of English in their social context, the use of the mother tongue among the German immigrants in Kitchener/Waterloo is gradually receding.
